Changing the way Postman knocks – New Post Office Act 2023

Post Office Act 2023 – Came into force on 18th June 2024 – Indian Post Office Act, 1898, is superseded by the new Act.

Exclusive privilege of collecting, processing and delivering letters is now done away with.

In 1898, the Post Office Act was enacted essentially to regulate the functioning of the post offices and primarily for mail services.   Over the years, the postal services have diversified and have become important vehicle for variety of services for the benefit of citizens.

Salient features to create simple legislative framework for delivery of citizen centric services,, banking and benefits of Government schemes at the last mile.

Exclusive privilege of collecting, processing and delivering of letters is done away with to enhance ease of doing business and living.

No penal provisions in the Act.  However, exemption on liability on the Post Office and Officials under the old Act is continued under the new Act for any loss, mis-delivery, delay or damage in course of any service except such liability as may be prescribed.
